What is Psychological Testing?

Psychological assessment, also known as psychological testing, is the process we use to arrive at some hypotheses about a person's behavior, personality, and capabilities.

In addition to offering outpatient counseling services, we also offer psychological evaluations/assessments which are often essential to clarify mental health diagnoses and to assist a treatment provider. Psychological Assessments are conducted to diagnose a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental disorders in children, adolescents, and adults including ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disability, and a variety of other clinical syndromes including depressive and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.

Psychological Assessments often involve integrating information gathered through a clinical interview, a review of  medical and social records (e.g., medical, psychological, educational) and information from other sources, and test data which is compiled through the results of standardized psychological tests. A client interested in Psychological Assessments should understand that testing does not involve looking for “right” or “wrong” responses, but for accurate information that can help a mental health provider provide the most accurate diagnosis and intervention recommendations.

What to Expect?

Many people who are referred for a psychological assessment do not know what to expect and may feel intimated by the process. Our goal by sharing information here is to aid you in feeling comfortable throughout the process, and to provide you with a realistic expectation. The process for psychological assessments at Wellsprings Wellness may involve the following:

  • A person (usually the person being evaluated or that person’s parent or guardian if they are a minor) calls our office and speaks with a Wellsprings Staff Member to set up the appointment. You will receive an intake appointment and general information related to receiving services at our practice. You will be asked to complete some intake paperwork prior to arriving for your first appointment. This Paperwork is required to be completed prior to your first appointment, and plays a critical role in the completion of your assessment.

  • First appointment. You (and your child, if they will be the person being assessed/evaluated) will meet with a psychologist to discuss your issues and concerns related to the assessment. Additionally, the psychologist will gather additional information regarding your (or the client's) educational and developmental history.

  • Schedule the test administration appointment(s) or wait for pre-authorization to be obtained from your insurance company. If you are paying out of pocket or your insurance company does not require pre-approval for psychological testing then you will likely schedule your next test administration appointments. However, if pre-approval is needed we will seek this on your behalf and contact you to schedule the next appointment(s) when we have received the approval. In addition to seeking Prior Authorization, we will obtain from you the necessary release of information forms required to obtain your past medical records, behavioral health records, and academic records (if a minor) in order to allow the psychologist a complete understanding of your medical and social history.

  • Test administration. Depending on the nature and number of the psychological assessments being administered this portion of the process can vary, but typically it involves participating in 2-5 hours of in-person testing at our office. Generally, we try to complete this step on one (or two) days. Your individual testing time amounts may be longer depending on the type of testing indicated by the Psychologist. You will conclude the final assessment administration appointment by scheduling a feedback session that likely will occur about 2 weeks from that day.

  • Feedback session. Approximately two weeks after the test administration phase is completed, the psychologist will meet with you to review the test findings and results. This usually includes discussing the relevant diagnosis and any recommendations. You will also be provided a copy of the formal psychological report for dissemination to any pertinent parties at your discretion. Please be aware that you may, upon your request, be provided the raw data obtained during the assessment process. However we will not be able to provide you with the specific psychological tests/assessments as these documents are trademarked and used by our practice under license. You will be provided access to the raw data collected, as well as the Psychologist Report regarding the assessments completed.
